The mission of In the Name of the Mother is to provide financial aid to single mothers diagnosed with cancer. The group’s efforts are founded on the principle that no mother undergoing cancer treatment should have to worry about how to keep food on her family’s table or how to keep her children safe and cared for.

What We Do

Administered through Catholic Charities Family Center of Montgomery County, In the Name of the Mother assists single mothers diagnosed with cancer by providing financial assistance for:

* Rent
* Utilities
* Housecleaning
* Medical needs
* Food
* Wigs and special clothes

Over the past four years, the charity has raised more than $200,000 in donations. These fund's have been distributed to more than 40 families throughout Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC.

History

In the Name of the Mother was founded in honor of Megan McConville, a young Montgomery County mother who, when she died of breast cancer in 2004, left behind a husband and four children, then aged one through six.

During Megan’s illness, her close-knit network of friends and family rallied around her, giving love and comfort to the McConville family as well as helping with the long list of everyday chores that fall to a mother of four young kids. Friends and neighbors took over the carpool, regularly dropped off home-cooked meals, babysat, and provided the kind of hands-on help every struggling family deserves, but few receive.

When Megan passed away, her friends and family decided to honor her memory by giving back to the community in Megan’s name.
